Age is Just a Number: Health benefits of exercise

It may be the time of year; perhaps it's my algorithms; who knows... What I do know is that the number of posts I've seen associated with going after a "body transformation" is staggering.

This, to me, shows that whilst I'd like to think that how we interpret the health benefits of exercise is shifting towards the importance of staying alive, there is still an unhealthy emphasis on how we are meant to look and what we all should be doing to achieve that neverending unattainable (for most) goal of visual perfection (whatever that is).

There are endless health benefits to exercise that go beyond physical appearance. Here are 8 that have less to do with how we look and more to do with remaining healthy and feeling great -

  1. A heart that's still young at heart: Being active can help lower your risk of heart disease and stroke, even as you get older. So, put down that choccy biscuit (or take it with you) and get moving!

  2. Improved balance and flexibility: As we age, our balance and flexibility can decline. However, varying our activities can help to improve both, reducing your risk of falls and injury. So, whether you play tennis or are a ballroom dancer, keep smashing down those aces!

  3. A mind still sharp as a tack: Exercise has improved cognitive function, including memory, attention, and executive function. Lowering the risk of dementia. So, if you're looking to stay sharp, you guessed it... get moving!

  4. Better bone health: Our bones can weaken as we age, putting us at risk for fractures and osteoporosis. But regular exercise can help to improve bone density and strength, keeping you strong and independent.

  5. Improved mood and self-esteem: Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression and improve overall mood. So, if you're feeling a little low, try going for a walk and see how you feel afterwards.

  6. Increased energy and stamina: Regular physical activity can help increase energy levels and stamina, making it easier to perform daily tasks. Feeling tired and sluggish? Get moving!

  7. Improved sleep: If you struggle to get some zzzz's, tire yourself out with a long dog walk (if you own a dog!). Being tired can help improve sleep quality and duration.

  8. Increased life longevity and independence: Regular physical activity is associated with a longer life expectancy and a reduced risk of premature death. So, if you want to live a long, healthy life, tie up those laces!

So, if you're over 50 and feeling like your best years are behind you, think again. Exercise is one of the most incredible things you can do to stay healthy, happy, and young at any age.
