Over 55 and unsure About Fitness? Jim's Gym Can Help!
Welcome to the Jim’s Gym Fitness MOT (Mobility Optimisation Tune-Up). I established Jim’s Gym for people over 55 to help bridge the gap between understanding the importance of being more active and incorporating physical activity into their lives.
I think it is fair to say we all know that exercise is good for us and are tirelessly reminded of the benefits: improved strength, heart health, mobility, and balance. Yet, knowledge alone doesn't always translate into action. Fear of injury, lack of time, a negative perception of exercise or simply not knowing where to start can all create significant barriers. These can extend far beyond merely understanding that exercise is beneficial.
Fitness Guidelines
The World Health Organization (WHO) has set comprehensive physical activity guidelines to help us stay healthy and independent as we age. These guidelines focus on maintaining and improving cardiovascular health, muscle and bone strength, and overall functional capacity, essential for leading a healthy, independent life as we age. Here is a brief overview:
Moderate-Intensity Aerobic Activity:
- Aim for at least 150–300 minutes per week. This can include activities such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling.
- Alternatively, engage in at least 75–150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, such as running or aerobics, or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity activity.
Muscle-Strengthening Activities:
- Perform muscle-strengthening exercises involving major muscle groups 2 or more days a week. This helps maintain muscle mass and strength, which is crucial for daily functioning and independence.
These guidelines are backed by science and provide a robust framework for maintaining health. However, they can seem daunting and unachievable for many, especially when just starting out.
So, here's the challenge I'm excited to tackle: helping Jim's Gym members (and future members!) find their perfect starting point for a sustainable, affordable, and—most importantly—enjoyable fitness routine!
Starting Small: Every Step Counts
The reality is that any exercise, however big or small, that exceeds your current activity level is a significant win and a step in the right direction. Building new healthy habits doesn't require drastic changes overnight. Small, consistent steps can lead to big improvements in your health and well-being. Once a healthy habit is formed, you will hopefully gravitate closer to those recommended guidelines.
This is where Jim’s Gym comes in. We aim to help you take those small, manageable steps to incorporate more frequent physical activity. And there's no better way to start than with our new ‘Jim’s Gym Fitness MOT’.
The Jim’s Gym Fitness MOT: Your Starting Point
The Fitness MOT is a series of quick and easy at-home tests to measure your fitness levels. These tests are tailored to assess key areas such as strength, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness.
Taking the Next Step
Once you complete the Fitness MOT, you'll have a clear benchmark of your current fitness abilities. This assessment helps you understand where you stand and inspires you to continue your fitness journey. Improvements in these exercises over time can be incredibly encouraging, which alone can help maintain your momentum. Remember, these assessments are subjective to your abilities. There is no gold standard for the results, just your personalised starting point.
Health Benefits of Small Doses of Exercise
Even small amounts of exercise can lead to significant health benefits. Studies have shown that short bursts of physical activity can improve cardiovascular health, boost mood, and enhance cognitive function. This is particularly important for older adults who may find extended periods of exercise daunting or physically challenging.
Moving Forward
Once you have completed the test, I encourage you to book a call to discuss your results, current level, and the next steps. At Jim's Gym, we're here to support you every step of the way and will happily offer you further guidance to help you define your goals and make suggestions to ensure you progress towards them.
